There areĀ 3 major properties of addition:
Commutative Property of Addition
When two numbers (addends) are added together the result is the same despite the order of those two numbers.
Example:
2 + 3 = 3 + 2
43 + 32 = 32 + 43
Associative Property of Addition
When 3 or more numbers are added together, the result is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped.
Example:
If you are adding 3 numbers together, you can add the first two together and then add the last number, or you can add the last two together and then add the first number.
(1 + 5) + 6 = 1 + (5 + 6)
(4 +6) + 11 = 4 + (6 +11)
Identity Property of Addition
The Identity Property of Addition states that any number added to 0 (Zero) will result in the original number.
Example:
8 + 0 = 8
4 + 0 = 4
